Every Christmas, I make a special bird card to send to my in-laws. They love to sit on their screened in porch and watch the antics of the birds as they visit the bird feeders. They have one big red cardinal that is so incredibly bossy over the other birds. Every once in a while the smaller birds will chase him away.....but more often than not, the cardinal gets to eat from the feeder first.
After seeing a few of the punch art cardinals on some of the stamping blogs I frequent, I just had to give it a try! I knew it would be the perfect card for my in-laws!
To create the cardinal, all you need is the Two Step Bird Punch. I punched the body once from Real Red cardstock. I then punched the wing two times using Real Red cardstock. I put some Tombow Liquid Glue on the back of the bird's head and attached one wing to resemble the crown the cardinal is so famous for. I then placed the second wing where you would expect a wing to be.....just popped up on a dimensional to make it look more realistic.
To make him look like a cardinal, I took my Basic Black marker and drew in his face. I then punched just the beak using a scrap of Pumpkin Pie cardstock. All that's needed is a little white gel pen dot for his eye.
The rest of the card is pretty easy to put together. I used my Big Shot for the Chocolate Chip layer and the scallop square.
The Old Olive layer is fashioned using the Direct-to-Paper technique.

I hope you enjoyed seeing how you can use your punches for items other than the original shape. What will you make next with your punches?
All of the items used on today's card are available from Stampin' Up! Ordering is easy......you can either email me your order or place an online order through my demonstrator website.
